There were years when I couldn't watch the news without wondering if something had happened to him. Every late-night phone call made my heart stop for a second.
I tried not to let him see how worried I was. He already had enough to carry without feeling responsible for my fear too.
The truth is, I knew I couldn't protect him while he was out there. All I could do was pray that God would watch over him when I couldn't.

Now I see him showing up for people, keeping his word and taking life one day at a time. He isn't pretending everything is perfect. He is just different — calmer, honest and finally free.

The day we received her diagnosis, I sat in the parking lot and cried before I went home. I was scared, and I didn't know what her future would look like.
